Practice
We create bespoke architectural responses that add value for the client and communities that we serve.
About
Founded in 1989 by Pankaj Patel and Andrew Taylor, the practice is recognised for designing exemplary masterplan, residential, mixed-use, education and cultural projects, alongside well-loved public realm. We believe that architecture should be clear and logical, and spaces suited to their purpose.
For over 30 years, Patel Taylor has delivered bespoke architectural solutions that create value for clients and lasting benefit for communities. Our work across London spans leading developers, Registered Providers and forward-thinking local authorities.
Defined by placemaking and informed by in-house research, our expertise includes urban densification, industrial co-location, tall buildings and residential typologies.
Recognised as a leading voice in British architecture, we have received more than 70 design awards, with projects featured in publications including The Guardian, BBC, The Times, Dezeen and Evening Standard.
We are committed to creating developments rooted in local heritage, drawing on the character of streets, squares and landscapes to shape contemporary places that reflect and enrich their communities.
Few practices are more paradoxical than Patel Taylor. I first came across them as designers of an exquisite garden hut, and as masterplanners for large pieces of cities as different as Antwerp and Reims. What related the vastly different scales of activity were two qualities that continue to pervade all the work: humanity and materiality. By humanity, I mean intense attention to the experiences of our bodies and minds in space, an understanding of what it is (or will be) like to sit there and look out through that window; what you will experience when you walk down that civic route; how you will meet your friends; how to avoid unwanted acquaintances. Few architects of their generation are more conscious of the importance of place and progression.

Approach
Taking a combined approach to architecture, landscape and urban design, we design frameworks that create a diversity of experience and reinforce a sense of place. On a human scale, we are shaping a place where people from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds can call home. From an urban design perspective, we are also creating a hierarchy of public spaces that fit together to strengthen the city fabric.
Our urban design and landscape strategies connect neighbourhoods and improve mobility as the district evolves. A clear hierarchy of streets, squares and gardens, modelled on London precedents, using site-specific typologies to shape a flexible public realm.
Analysing site, brief and cost, we create bespoke architecture that adds client value and strengthens communities. Clear, logical spaces are enhanced by materials, craft, light and shade, grounded in buildability and commercial practicality.
We test design at every scale, from arrival to home detailing and shared spaces. Buildings frame gardens and courtyards for communal and private moments, while refined touchstones add daily delight.
Sustainability
Why not aim for more?
It is critical that our shared vision for a site has something to enthuse all interested parties. This should not be presented as a “intensification” or “uplift” but rather an “Opportunity for More”
More of what could make this project great
More appealing to Local Authority
More attractive to the local community
More sustainable to future residents
more Natural
Maximise the provision of water, soft landscaping, biodiversity and growing spaces.
more Natural
Improve the clarity of the site by reducing the number of unique building types so construction budget can be spent on high quality facades and landscaping.
more Emotional
Focus on creating places where communities can thrive and people want to live
Social value
We aim to practice ‘Responsible Architecture’, recognising our role in society and finding ways to support and give back to the communities in which we work.
We are responsible for managing the economic, social and environmental impacts of our activities in a way that enhances their positive effects and minimises their negative.
Social value is integrated into our day to day practice. Internally this may be in form of knowledge sharing, project reviews, mentoring and providing work experience placements for school age students and undergraduates.
Externally, we support charitable giving and a variety of different networks, volunteer our time, tutoring and mentoring at universities.
We are able to provide high-level involvement and commitment to this social value programme and the directors of each practice in our team will guarantee that we deliver on our promises.
