Putney Wharf transforms and extends a 1960s office tower to create new homes, a restaurant and riverside public space on the Thames in Putney.
Retaining and recladding the existing structure, alongside a new ‘prow’, generate 30% additional space while giving the tower a new identity. Terracotta cladding responds to the Victorian red brick character of Putney High Street, while removing parts of the upper structure creates a stepped profile with generous penthouse terraces.
At ground level, a new riverside piazza and improvements around the neighbouring church open up the site and reconnect the tower with its surroundings. The project demonstrates how the creative reuse of an existing structure can unlock both architectural and urban value.
