The Albert Sloman Library extension is a new wing to the University of Essex’s 1960s library, bringing together library facilities, special collections and new reading and study spaces.
The architecture deliberately responds to the character and structural expression of the original building, continuing the rhythm of its two-storey columns and four storeys of cantilevered accommodation. The new wing connects through the original 1963 core, using breakout panels incorporated into the building when it was first designed to allow for future expansion.
Developed in consultation with the University’s faculties, the extension preserves the calm, academic character of the library while creating flexible spaces capable of adapting to changing approaches to teaching, learning and study.
