The Athletes’ Village comprises two residential plots, Lucia and Manuka Heights, designed for the London 2012 Olympic Games and subsequently adapted as permanent homes within East Village.
Following our commission to develop the Design Codes for the wider Athletes’ Village, the two plots were designed with BVN as city blocks arranged around private courtyards. A hierarchy of streets, gardens and entrances creates a transition from the public neighbourhood to more intimate residential spaces.
Active ground floors bring shops and cafés to the street, while the apartments were designed for efficient conversion after the Games. The resulting tenure-blind neighbourhood provides 60% affordable housing as part of the lasting legacy of London 2012.
The real draw is the sense of character and community. There’s green space at every turn, but not a single “Keep off the Grass” sign in sight. Better still, people are using them.
