Eastside City Park is Birmingham’s first new city-centre park for over a century, creating a major public landscape and green route through the Eastside regeneration area towards the city centre.
Designed with Allain Provost following an international competition, the park unfolds as a sequence of distinct landscapes connected by a continuous route. Along its length it is experienced as a changing narrative, while routes across the park create moments of calm within journeys through the city.
Varied topography, planting and public spaces create different settings for activity and respite, establishing new connections with the history, character and evolving urban fabric of Eastside.
Eastside City Park is architecture at its best. It deals with the urban realm and architecture on a really large scale, and it mediates lots of complex issues at the urban level. In design terms it's very beautiful. It's very striking, it's very simple, it's layout is very simple, but there's a complexity within it which makes it very interesting to walk through. It sits beautifully in its site and it does a lot for the buildings and area that it's in.
